Are The Holidays Affecting Your Sleep?

While the holidays are often a time of joy, they can also be stressful.  The demands to shop, clean, wrap presents, attend social functions and prepare for visitors may come at a cost. 

For many, the holidays demand sacrificing sleep in order to get everything done. 

The most common reason for fatigue is sleep deprivation.  It may seem that skipping sleep to finish all of your holiday chores is harmless, but sleep deprivation and fatigue can have serious consequences.  Lack of sleep may cause more irritability, depression, loss of energy and a reduced ability to cope with stress.  These negative feelings may interfere with your interactions with family and friends.  More concerning, however, are sleepy drivers.  It is well established that sleepy drivers are at a higher risk of auto accidents.  As travel peaks during the holiday season, sleep deprived drivers are putting themselves and others at risk.

Patients that suffer from sleep apnea (OSA) should also be aware of possible holiday pitfalls that can affect their sleep and health.  Most important is to remember to bring your CPAP unit when you travel.  While it may be inconvenient to travel with your CPAP equipment, you need to use your CPAP every night to treat your apnea.  Airlines allow CPAP units on flights.  It may be best to use your CPAP as a carry-on in case your luggage gets lost.  Furthermore, your CPAP will likely eliminate snoring.  This is especially important if you are sharing a room with family while traveling.  Snoring can also be detrimental to the sleep of others if it keeps them awake. 

Similar to sleep deprivation, untreated sleep apnea can lead to daytime fatigue.  This may prevent you from fully participating in family events or enjoying your holiday.  Keep in mind that over-eating, smoking and alcohol can make apnea worse.  Be careful not to over indulge.  If you are planning to drink, try to avoid alcohol too close to bedtime.

Sleep deprivation and sleep apnea are treatable.  Make sleep a priority.  You may find that your holidays are more enjoyable if you are better rested.  While some errands may seem important, your health should come first.  Listed below are some tips for a better night’s sleep

  • Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule.  Aim to go to bed and awaken at similar times every day.
  • Exercise.  Regular exercise promotes better sleep.
  • Use caution in consuming alcohol or caffeine close to bedtime. 
  • Avoid over-eating.  Try not to eat within 3-4 hours of going to bed
  • Don’t drive tired.  If you are sleepy, stay where you are or find a place to sleep.  If you find yourself getting sleepy while driving take frequent breaks to increase your alertness
  • Use your CPAP if you have sleep apnea
